In the first mother game he was an alien though [link] . Which was after revenge for the humans for stealing his race PSI abilities (I think it was?). But in earthbound I guess it's his soul, or that he just changes?.. At least he's have no control in the end....

Oh yeah, speaking of Ness of co. Am I the only one thinking when Jeff's father put theirs mind into a robot, and hearing the drilling sounds. That he's removing theirs brains and put it into the robots??..}
